Traditional wet shaving in 2019 is looking to be a great year for shavers! We have gone undercover with some of our UK artisan shaving soap makers to find out what they will be bringing us in 2019:
Phoenix and Beau
For Phoenix and Beau, 2019 is the year of the vegan shaving soap range. These will be available in a new size format of approximately 50g and will be available in recyclable, cardboard packaging only. There are two important points to differentiate here; first, we have become extremely cognisant of the damage most plastics are having on our environment and want to move away from this. Second, we want to offer a more affordable shaving product that customers actually get to use in their entirety.
Phoenix and Beau want to promote the recycling and re-purposing of the old 4oz plastic soap jars and will be phasing this format out. Soon all soaps, both vegan and tallow will only be available in recyclable cardboard packaging. Naturally these will retain the strong design elements we have come to expect from P&B, but the days of hard plastic soap jars are numbered.
The intent is to produce a shaving soap that remains stored in its original packaging, sat on a bathroom shelf, windowsill or within a drawer, whilst the customer removes the quantity that they need for their shave and places that in to their respective shaving bowl.
Phoenix and Beau want to encourage environmental awareness over the immensely wasteful and damaging practice of using plastics as part of our product production and respective grooming practices.
There is a new core soap scheduled for a spring 2019 release, Iceni will be available as a tallow based shaving soap, alcohol based aftershave splash and post shave lotion. Phoenix and Beau will be adding to the aftershave splashes by introducing Imperial Rum and Trafalgar. They will also be exploring new ground in the second half of the year with brand new limited editions releases, ‘Right Handed Giant’, ‘More Glow: Atomic’ and ‘Night Witch’.
OSP - The Obsessive Soap Perfectionist
The Obsessive Soap Perfectionist (OSP) has now stopped production of shaving creams and we will see some new releases later in the year - we await further alerts! We still have some in stock so catch them while you can......
d'Ardenne Short & Bell, the soapmakers synthetic sister brand will be a key focus in 2019, with Chambre being released on 1st February 2019. The shaving soap will have a tallow base with a matching aftershave tonic being available. Later in the year will see releases of Kyoto, No 8 and Coconut.
In 2018 we introduced you to Oatcake Soaps. A brand new UK artisan with a core shaving soap range and released in December, Limited Edition Abyss.
All packaging is already plastic free and in response to feedback, will be introducing wider tins later in the year for easier lathering. We will update you when these will be available from us.
Moving forward the shaving soap recipe has been tweaked slightly to improve lather density and residual slickness, which was a concern among some wet shavers.
Love it or hate it? The big news is Driftwood. Many of you loved this scent, however there was also a fair few of you that really didn't! If you loved it, get in quick - it is being replaced with Mahogany, which will be less earthy and smokey, with a sweeter, warmer wood scent. What do you think agents? Let us know how you feel about the demise of Driftwood!
Wickham Soap Co
Agents have received word that Wickham Soap Co artisan Darron has been unwell over the New Year and is recovering at home. We wish him a speedy recovery and will update you all when we hear more.
